An opinion piece in an Israeli newspaper has called for the release of former prime minister Imran Khan, arguing that his continued imprisonment raises questions about due process in Pakistan.

The article, written by Michael Jankelowitz and published in The Jerusalem Post on Thursday, contends that Imran Khan’s detention is “increasingly difficult to view as a straightforward matter of law and order” and instead carries “the hallmarks of political retribution”.

The writer points to the 2022 vote of no-confidence vote and the subsequent legal cases and also refers to reports of due process concerns.

The piece further links Imran’s detention to what it says is a broader crackdown on the PTI and then goes into history to try and situate it in that context.

Arguing that the matter has implications beyond domestic politics, the article says perceptions of unfair legal processes could affect public trust and international credibility and then asks for releasing the PTI founder.
