PESHAWAR: The Accountability Court on Thursday extended the physical remand of former director general Health Dr Shaukat Ali by seven more days in a multibillion rupees scandal while procuring medicines and surgical equipment.

The case was heard by Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Hamid Mughal.

During the hearing, the accused was produced before the court while the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) special prosecutor Habibullah Baig, the investigation officer and the defence counsel were also present.

The NAB prosecutor informed the court that the former DG Health was arrested on charges of corruption and embezzlement of funds. He said that Dr Shaukat was accused of misappropriating over one billion rupees in the procurement of medicines.

The prosecutor contended that the accused had made payments to favoured firms through fake challans and also transferred funds in the name of his wife to acquire assets. It was added that the accused had made further disclosures during the investigation and that more inquiry was required.
