LAHORE:The 17th anniversary of the police officials martyred in terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team at Liberty Chowk was observed on Monday.

Senior officers of the Lahore Police visited the graves of the martyrs, laid floral wreaths and offered prayers. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a salute in honour of the fallen personnel.

Tributes were paid to Head Constable Faisal Rasheed and Constable Tipu Fareed of the Police Guard, along with other martyrs of the attack. Traffic Warden Tanveer Iqbal, Head Constable Faisal Rasheed and Constables Mudassar Nadeem, Zafar Iqbal, Mohammad Sultan and Tipu Fareed embraced martyrdom on March 3, 2009, while thwarting the terrorist assault.

IGP Punjab Abdul Kareem said the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty remain a source of pride for the police force and the nation. He maintained that Punjab Police rendered historic sacrifices to ensure public safety and played a pivotal role in the revival of international cricket, as well as sports and cultural activities in the country. CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana said that the martyrs set a remarkable example of courage and valour.
