AJGL strengthens Pakistan’s golf pipeline with landmark WAGR Junior Championship

Pakistan’s junior golf continues to gather momentum as the 2nd Ace Junior Golf League (AJGL) WAGR Junior Amateur Championship concluded successfully at Lahore Garrison Greens, producing promising champions while reinforcing a structured pathway for young golfing talent. The three-day championship, dedicated to Pakistan’s legendary professional golfer Shabbir Iqbal, highlighted not only competitive excellence but also the progressive transformation of junior golf in the country.

The championship crowned Sharaan Ali of Rumanza Golf Club as the Boys Champion after an impressive performance with rounds of 68, 71, and 75, confirming his emergence as one of Pakistan’s most promising junior prospects. In the Girls Championship, Aleesa Rashid of Gymkhana Golf Club displayed remarkable consistency and composure, securing the title with scores of 86, 89, and 85 across three competitive rounds.

The tournament’s recognition by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) significantly elevates its importance, placing Pakistan’s junior golfers on an internationally acknowledged competitive platform. Such recognition is vital for providing young players with global exposure and ranking opportunities, ultimately strengthening Pakistan’s representation on international golfing stages.

The championship also served as a tribute to Shabbir Iqbal, whose legacy remains unmatched in Pakistan golf. With more than 210 professional victories, five Pakistan Open titles, twelve Punjab Open wins, and a Top 7 finish at the Asian Tour Q-School, Iqbal’s career continues to inspire aspiring golfers. His international representation of Pakistan at the 2009 World Cup further solidifies his standing as a benchmark of golfing excellence.

Beyond the overall championship titles, the tournament showcased impressive performances across multiple competitive categories. Abdul Moez secured victory in the Boys Elite Category, followed by Shahvaiz Niazi, while Sharaan Ali further strengthened his dominance by winning the Albatross Boys Category, finishing ahead of Zayd Omer. The Eagle Boys Category witnessed Mustafa Khan narrowly defeating Haseeb Naeem, reflecting the intense competition among emerging players.

The youngest participants also demonstrated notable promise. In the Birdie Boys Category (ages 6-10), Muhammad Huzaifa and Muhammad Aoun secured the top two positions in a nine-hole, three-day format designed to gradually prepare young players for full championship play. This developmental structure reflects AJGL’s strategic emphasis on nurturing talent from an early age.

In the girls’ divisions, Rimsha Irfan claimed victory in the Elite Girls Category, while Aleesa Rashid added further distinction by securing the Albatross Girls Category, finishing ahead of Zarish Irfan. The Eagle Girls Category was won by Zoay Qureshi, with Dua Farid Rao finishing as runner-up, further underlining the growing depth of female participation in junior golf.

The steady rise of AJGL reflects visionary leadership and institutional support. Gen Hilal Hussain, Patron-in-Chief of AJGL and former President of the Pakistan Golf Federation, alongside Dr Asma Shami, Chairperson AJGL and former Chairperson Ladies Golf PGF, have played instrumental roles in building sustainable junior development structures. The League’s technical strength is further enhanced by Munazza Shaheen, Pakistan’s first lady Rules Official certified by R&A St Andrews, who continues to strengthen professional standards within junior competitions.

Currently, AJGL conducts monthly competitions for nearly 150 junior golfers aged 6 to 21, effectively functioning as a nursery for national talent and complementing the developmental goals of the Pakistan Golf Federation. This systematic approach is gradually shaping Pakistan’s future golfing landscape.

One of AJGL’s most commendable achievements remains its strong commitment to inclusivity. At both the Rumanza championship and the Lahore event, 14 underprivileged junior golfers from Peshawar were fully sponsored, with travel, accommodation and participation expenses covered.

The initiative, driven by the dedicated efforts of Col Shahadat Hussain, with support from Ms Shehzil Fareed and Peshawar Golf Club, reflects a progressive vision that aims to ensure talent is nurtured irrespective of socio-economic limitations.

The championship also emphasised education and ethics in sport. A specialised rules session conducted by Munazza Shaheen reinforced the importance of discipline, integrity and adherence to the spirit of golf. Professional golfer Shahid Javaid further motivated participants by highlighting Shabbir Iqbal’s demanding practice regimen and professional discipline, praising AJGL organisers for honouring national golfing icons while inspiring future generations.

The prize distribution ceremony attracted prominent figures from Pakistan’s golfing fraternity, including the Patron of Lahore Garrison Greens as Chief Guest, alongside club leadership and senior golfing officials. The Chief Guest commended AJGL’s efforts, stating that such initiatives provide young athletes with the platform and confidence required to represent Pakistan with pride.

Another defining advancement in this championship was the introduction of live scoring technology, developed by Astute Solutions, enabling real-time access for players, parents and officials. The modernised scoring system enhanced transparency and professionalism, aligning Pakistan’s junior tournaments with international standards. Appreciation was also extended to Julke, owned by Bela Azam, for continued financial support, as well as Lahore Garrison Greens for hosting and facilitating the event.

In many ways, the championship symbolises the evolution of junior golf in Pakistan. What was once considered a niche sport limited by accessibility is now steadily transforming into a structured, competitive and inclusive developmental ecosystem. Through consistent leadership, institutional backing and grassroots initiatives, AJGL is not merely organising tournaments, it is building the foundation for Pakistan’s next generation of golfing champions.
