PESHAWAR: Condemning the non-payment of salaries to faculty members for May 2026 and the delay in pension payments to retired faculty members for the past two months, Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) has demanded that the provincial government immediately release funds to address the prolonged financial crisis in the University of Peshawar.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, PUTA expressed concern over the continued delay in the payment of salaries and pensions, saying that university teachers and retired faculty members were facing severe financial hardships despite fulfilling their academic, research, and administrative responsibilities in a smooth manner.
The association stated that salaries and pensions are the sole source of income for the current and retired employees of the university and the persistent delays have placed many families under serious financial strain.
PUTA criticized the indifference of both the provincial government and the University of Peshawar administration in resolving the issue. The statement said that inadequate budget allocations had resulted in faculty members remaining without salaries for nearly three months during the current fiscal year.
According to the association, the prolonged uncertainty has negatively affected faculty morale and contributed to the growing loss of qualified academic staff from the university. The teachers’ body further revealed that the university’s request for a grant of Rs619 million remains pending with the government, while teachers and pensioners continue to bear the consequences of the financial crisis.
PUTA warned that the continued neglect of the institution’s financial needs was damaging the reputation and smooth functioning of the University of Peshawar, one of the province’s premier higher education institutions.
The association cautioned that the situation could also adversely affect students and the overall quality of higher education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The association urged the provincial government to release forthwith the required funds and ensure the payment of all outstanding salaries and pensions, stressing that urgent action was needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation and safeguard the future of the university.
