Violent crime declines in City, claims DIG Operations

LAHORE:Lahore has recorded a noticeable decline in key indicators of violent crime during the first quarter of 2026, according to data shared by DIG Operations Lahore, Faisal Kamran, in an interview with The News.

Discussing crime trends in the provincial capital, the DIG Operations stated that comparative figures for January to March 2026 show a reduction in both murder and attempted murder cases when measured against the same period in previous years. According to the data, murder cases declined by 50 per cent compared to 2023, 38 per cent compared to 2024, and 44 per cent compared to 2025.

He shared that attempted murder cases also recorded a decrease during the same period, falling by 56 per cent compared to 2023, 45 per cent compared to 2024, and 37 per cent compared to 2025.

Providing additional context, Faisal Kamran noted that the downward trend remained consistent when examining the month of March alone. The data indicates that murder cases in March 2026 dropped by 50 per cent compared to March 2023 and March 2024, and by 54 per cent compared to March 2025.

Similarly, attempted murder cases in March showed a decline of 52 per cent compared to March 2023, 49 per cent compared to March 2024, and 39 per cent compared to March 2025.During the interview, the DIG Operations also referred to broader crime data covering multiple categories, including vehicle snatching, car and motorcycle theft, robbery, burglary, and other street crimes. These figures were presented in a comparative format for the first quarters of 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, offering a comprehensive overview of crime patterns in the city.

In addition to local statistics, Faisal Kamran cited the Crime and Safety Index 2026, noting that Lahore ranks among cities with comparatively lower crime levels and stands ahead of several major international cities in terms of safety indicators.

The data shared during the interview provides a broad snapshot of crime trends in Lahore for early 2026, particularly highlighting a reduction in serious violent offences.Faisal Kamran stated that, under the CM’s vision, peace was successfully maintained during recent protests by a religious party. He said that the police ensured law and order remained intact and prevented any disruption to routine civic life.

The DIG emphasised that extremist attitudes are being actively discouraged and will not be allowed to challenge the peaceful environment of Lahore, describing the city as a metropolitan hub of Punjab where stability remains a top priority. He added that individuals involved in extremist activities are now facing trial in courts of law.

Referring to a specific incident, he said that certain religious elements attempted to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere by staging a protest outside the US Consulate. However, Lahore Police effectively managed the situation and prevented the protesters from escalating tensions. He noted that the police response received widespread appreciation.

Responding to a question regarding minority rights, the official stated that minorities are equal citizens of Pakistan and enjoy the same level of safety and security as the majority population. He said that places of worship belonging to minority communities are fully protected by Lahore Police.

He reiterated that no sectarian or religious group will be allowed to derail the peaceful environment of the city, affirming the department’s continued commitment to maintaining harmony, law and order, and public safety.
