LAHORE : Environment DG Imran Hamid Sheikh has said that the business community is working hand in hand with the government to curb plastic and the target has been set to make Punjab completely plastic-free soon.
He said that caustic bags will be brought under the legal ambit in all shops including Lahore, while there was a plan to eliminate single-use plastic in the entire Punjab within a month.
According to the DG, actions were underway against substandard plastic bags and more than two cases have been registered in this regard. Positive results of the anti-plastic campaign launched five months ago are coming out. Imran Hamid Sheikh said that single-use plastic has already been eliminated in all the government’s model bazaars, shopping malls and plazas, while now this campaign is being extended to every bazaar and shop in the province.
He added that anti-plastic squads have been established in 10 cities of Punjab, which have so far imposed fines of more than one crore.
According to the DG, strict action is also being taken against factories manufacturing defective plastic bags and plans are being made to close some factories. According to the global ranking, a 33.5 percent improvement in the environment has been recorded in Punjab.
