LAHORE:In a major push to tackle recurring urban flooding, the Punjab government has developed an extensive network of 18 mega underground storage tanks (UGSTs) across Lahore, with 13 already operational and playing a critical role in managing storm water.

According to official figures of Wasa, the functional UGSTs collectively offer a storage capacity of around 25 million gallons, significantly enhancing the city’s ability to absorb excess rainwater during peak monsoon spells.

Wasa MD Ghufran Ahmed while talking with The News said that the project was strategically targeting major waterlogging hotspots across Lahore to provide relief to the public.

These included Lawrence Road, Sheranwala Gate, Alhamra Arts Council on Mall Road, Gaddafi Stadium, Allama Iqbal Town, Abid Market, Ali Block in Garden Town, Tikka Chowk in Johar Town, Sharif Park in Shah Jamal, Kareem Park on Ravi Road, the Lahore Railway Station, Cooper Road, Tajpura, Islampura, Chauburji Chowk, Barkat Market, and areas near UET Lahore on GT Road.
