PESHAWAR: With a rise in crime rates in Peshawar, political leaders have now started receiving threatening calls demanding extortion. In the latest incident, Ikram Uddin, provincial president of Tehrik Jawanan Pakistan, was targeted by unknown extortionists who called him and threatened him to pay a large sum. The extortionists claimed to be members of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). According to sources, Ikram Uddin lodged a complaint with Gul Bahar Police Station, reporting multiple threatening calls and voice messages. The perpetrators demanded $100,000 and warned that failure to meet their demands would lead to serious consequences. However, no FIR has been registered so far, raising concerns among the political leader and the public about the response of law enforcement agencies.
Ikram Uddin stated that the extortionists have also threatened him and his family, but police have yet to increase security.
In his statement, he urged the Chief Minister and the Inspector General of Police to take immediate notice. He warned that the increasing extortion attempts by individuals claiming affiliation with extremist groups are heightening the risk of criminal activities spreading in the region.
So far, police officials have not publicly commented on the case. However, police sources said that the investigation is ongoing and that a formal FIR will be registered in due course.
