The digital revolution has transformed the way citizens consume and share information through digital tools. Unfortunately, many struggle to differentiate between authentic and misleading information within this overwhelming stream. In Pakistan, misinformation and disinformation have severely affected civic engagement. For instance, during elections and public protests, unverified news about rigging, violence or institutional actions spreads rapidly on online platforms, creating panic and mistrust among citizens. Similarly, false health-related information during the Covid-19 pandemic discouraged vaccination and weakened collective civic responsibility. Such examples show how fake news can distort public opinion and disrupt democratic participation.
To address this challenge, the concept of digital citizenship provides a framework for effective engagement on social and political issues while respecting privacy, verifying facts, avoiding hate speech and abiding by cyber laws. It encourages citizens to share only verified information and to respect diverse opinions. By consulting reliable sources and questioning doubtful content, citizens can play a vital role in debunking misinformation.
