The monster rises

‘Methane Monster’ is a term used to describe the massive amounts of methane gas trapped in Arctic permafrost. This is permanently frozen soil that spans millions of square kilometres. If that frozen ground melts, this gas could be unleashed. Right now, the region is heating two to four times faster than the global average. Warmer temperatures thaw permafrost from the surface down and under lakes.

Thawing permafrost could emit large quantities of methane, reinforcing global warming and making it harder to stop temperature rises. The scale and timing are uncertain, but this is a real concern in climate science.
