Some may view the letter from 14 former cricket captains to the prime minister expressing concern for Imran Khan’s health as interference in Pakistan’s internal matters. However, many will appreciate it as a gesture of goodwill from the global cricketing fraternity for their great contemporary. It is particularly admirable that Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev found the courage to speak for a Pakistani peer, rival and friend, given the current level of hostility between our two nations. These Indian legends hail from the ‘golden period’ of Pakistan-India cricket. It was an era where, despite fierce rivalry on the field, there was mutual admiration and respect both on and off the field. Perhaps they could also write to their own prime minister and cricketing establishment, asking them to advise Indian players to uphold cricketing respect and goodwill while playing against Pakistan, A handshake and a smile would be welcome.
