While the situation along University Road, Karachi has drawn significant attention due to the construction of the BRT Red Line, the problem is not limited to one corridor. Citizens in multiple localities are facing severe difficulties due to damaged pedestrian infrastructure as a result of ongoing construction work. Large-scale infrastructure projects are essential for long-term urban development, but public safety must not be compromised during their execution. Temporary pedestrian bridges, properly marked zebra crossings with traffic wardens and functional traffic signals are immediate necessities. Regular safety inspections and timely maintenance of pedestrian facilities should also be made mandatory in all affected zones.
