In a move aimed at safeguarding flight operations at the Karachi airport, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director (MD) Tariq Ali Nizamani has ordered immediate removal of garbage from the vicinity of Thaddo Nullah and Chokor Nullah observing that garbage attracted scavenging birds and could pose a threat to aircraft movements.
He instructed the contractor concerned not only to carry out immediate cleaning operations in the affected areas but also maintain effective daily waste management arrangements to prevent recurrence of dumping sites near the airport. He also directed the authorities to improve cleanliness standards in Pehlwan Goth and Bhittaiabad.
Later, the SSWMB MD conducted a detailed inspection of various localities in the Korangi and Malir districts to review sanitation and operational arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram. Relevant officials and representatives of waste management companies accompanied him during the visit.
The inspection focused on cleanliness measures around imambargahs, procession routes, mosques and venues of religious gatherings, including sweeping operations, lime sprinkling and other civic arrangements.
On the occasion, Nizamani directed that SSWMB machinery and sanitation staff remain deployed at all key locations. He also instructed the establishment of facilitation camps for mourners and deployment of dedicated cleaning teams alongside processions to ensure uninterrupted cleanliness services.
Meeting organisers of imambargahs, he stated that all necessary cleanliness arrangements for Muharram had been finalised and no inconvenience would be allowed for the mourners. He added that continuous monitoring was being carried out through close coordination with imambargah administrations, district authorities and other municipal institutions.
