KARAK: The employees of the Pakistan Post staged a protest at the General Post Office (GPO) in Karak against the alleged plans to downsize the department.
Addressing the gathering, Pakistan Post Union leader Karamatullah Khattak alleged that preparations were underway to terminate 30 percent of the department’s workforce and shut down 20 percent of post offices across the country.
He said postal employees would strongly resist any move to lay off staff or close operational offices, adding that workers would not allow a single employee to be dismissed.Khattak termed the proposed measures an attack not only on employees but also on public services, arguing that weakening a longstanding national institution would adversely affect citizens who rely on postal facilities.
He urged Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan to address the challenges facing Pakistan Post through reforms and investment rather than downsizing.According to him, the department needed greater authority, modern resources, and improved facilities to meet contemporary demands and become a more efficient and profitable organisation.
“Closing institutions is not a sign of good governance; strengthening and modernising them is the real test of leadership,” he said. The union leader appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the communications minister, and other relevant authorities to immediately accept the employees’ demands and reconsider any plans for layoffs or closures.
He warned that if their concerns were ignored, postal employees would intensify their protest campaign and could lock down offices as part of future action. The protesting employees reiterated the commitment to protecting jobs and ensuring the continued functioning of postal services across the country.
