Dengue larvae found in over 7pc of houses in 7 UCs

Rawalpindi:As many as 56 out of 190 union councils (UCs) in the district are having Breteau Index above three while four of these UCs are with Breteau Index between seven and 10 while three UCs are having BI above 10 making the situation alarming.

Data collected by ‘The News’ on Friday has revealed that in the last 19 days, another 27 union councils have been found with Breteau Index between three and seven taking the total number of UCs to 49 from where the larvae of ‘aedes aegypti’, the vector that causes dengue fever, have been found in three per cent to seven per cent of the houses checked.

The teams of district health authority found larvae of dengue vector from seven to 10 per cent of the houses in as many as four UCs while over 10 per cent of the houses were found positive for dengue larvae in another three union councils.

On Friday, there are a total of 134 UCs in the district with Breteau Index below three. It is important that on May 31, this year, there were 165 UCs with BI less than three. The daily report prepared on dengue prevention and control by District Health Authority Rawalpindi on Friday has revealed that to date, larvae of ‘aedes’ mosquitoes have been found from a total of 39,355 houses and 6,910 spots in the district. The teams of the District Health Authority Rawalpindi have found the larvae of ‘aedes’ mosquitoes from as many as 678 houses and 97 spots in a single day, on Thursday, in the district.

Data reveals that a total of 1,268 teams of the District Health Authority Rawalpindi have been working in the field for dengue vector surveillance that have lodged as many as 941 FIRs so far for violation of standard operating procedures designed by the Punjab government for prevention and control of dengue fever in the province. The DHA teams have sealed 233 premises and issued 905 challans for violating SOPs so far.

Data reveals that in the last 19 days, the DHA teams have lodged 446 FIRs, sealed 120 premises and issued challans to as many as 429 violators though the number of UCs with greater Breteau Index is continuously on the rise. It is worth mentioning here the greater larval density hints towards a severe dengue fever outbreak in an area.
