LAHORE : The Pakistan Peoples Party launched an ambitious membership campaign in Lahore on Saturday, with senior party leaders vowing to challenge the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) in what they described as a defining political battle for the city ahead of the upcoming local body elections.

The campaign was inaugurated by President of PPP Women Wing Punjab, Samina Khalid Ghurki, and President PPP Lahore, Faisal Mir, in a ceremony that also witnessed the announcement of new town-level office bearers.

Addressing the gathering, Faisal Mir declared that Lahore would witness its first direct electoral contest between the PPP and the PMLN since 1988, framing the upcoming local body elections as a historic clash between the political legacies of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Zia ul-Haq. He expressed strong confidence that the party would deliver outstanding results when voters head to the polls.

Mir also revealed that ten thousand membership cards had already been distributed among the presidents of ten towns across the city, as part of a broader drive to deepen the party’s grassroots presence. He set an ambitious target of enrolling 115,000 members in Lahore, signaling the party’s intent to mount a serious organizational challenge in Punjab’s capital.

Samina Khalid Ghurki echoed that sentiment, asserting that the PPP was firmly on course to reclaim its political stronghold in Punjab. She also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the forthcoming Gilgit-Baltistan elections, describing a PPP victory there as well within reach.

Senior Vice President PPP Lahore Mian Shaid Abbas, Vice President Aamir Butt, Faizan Manawan President Wahga Town and Muneer Dagran President of Sadar Town were present on the occasion.

President of Pakistan Peoples Party Lahore, Faisal Mir, and Media & Political Adviser to PPP Lahore, Agha Syed Taqi Shah, stated in a joint statement that the political philosophy of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto has always centered on safeguarding the rights of the common citizen, farmers, labourers, and other underprivileged segments of society. They emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party remains the custodian of this people-centric ideology and continues to regard the welfare and empowerment of the working class as indispensable to the nation’s progress and prosperity.

Faisal Mir and Agha Syed Taqi Shah further expressed their expectation that the government, in its forthcoming budget, will announce meaningful and far-reaching measures aimed at providing genuine relief to the public.
