PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women (KPCSW) has stressed the urgent need for the early establishment and notification of District Protection Committees under the Domestic Violence Act 2021 to ensure timely assistance and protection for victims of domestic abuse.
In a letter addressed to the secretary of the Department of Social Welfare, Special Education, and Women Empowerment, KPCSW Chairperson Dr Sumera Shams said that the effective role of District Protection Committees is crucial for preventing domestic violence incidents and providing meaningful support to survivors.
The letter noted that in view of recent reported cases of domestic violence, there is a need to strengthen institutional mechanisms that can ensure protection, guidance, and access to essential services for affected women and other victims.
According to the KPCSW, District Protection Committees can play a key role in improving coordination among relevant departments, ensuring effective implementation of the law, and facilitating timely access to services for victims.
The commission chief has urged the provincial government to prioritize the notification and operationalization of these committees so that protection and assistance for domestic violence survivors can be made more effective.The KPCSW reiterated the commitment to fully cooperate with the government and relevant institutions by providing coordination and technical support in this regard.
