The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) successfully resolved up to 90 per cent of sanitation-related complaints received through its 1128 helpline, mobile app and WhatsApp services during Eidul Azha, according to board officials.
They said that more than 164,000 tonnes of sacrificial animal remains and municipal waste have been transported to designated landfill sites as part of the ongoing cleanliness operation.
SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani reviewed the Karachi-wide cleanliness campaign on Saturday, and directed field teams to ensure the complete removal of all remaining animal waste and garbage by midnight. He said that the remaining complaints would also be addressed within the stipulated time frame.
According to the SSWMB, sacrificial animal remains and waste collected from areas across the city have been shifted to the Jam Chakro and Gond Pass landfill sites, as well as the Sharafi garbage transfer station.
A total of nine trenches had been established at these locations for the safe burial of offal and animal remains. The board said that all 99 collection points set up across the city had been fully cleared by Saturday night.
The process of closing the burial trenches is now under way, accompanied by the application of lime and the spraying of disinfectants to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of disease.
As part of the post-Eid sanitation measures, major roads and thoroughfares across the city were washed with rosewater-mixed water, while disinfectant spraying and lime application continued in various localities.
Nizamani paid tribute to sanitation workers and operational staff who continued to perform their duties in extremely hot weather conditions. He said that the success of the Eid operation was the result of teamwork and a collective commitment to providing maximum relief to residents during the festive period.
The MD also announced that SSWMB teams would remain active in the field until late at night to ensure the operation reaches its successful conclusion.
Meanwhile, the authorities also took action against individuals involved in scattering animal waste and creating unhygienic conditions. Several people were arrested during the operation, and FIRs were registered against them under the supervision of assistant commissioners.
SSWMB officials expressed satisfaction over the overall progress of the Eidul Azha cleanliness drive, and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining cleanliness and public hygiene across Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
