A sessions court has handed down a collective sentence of 20 years in prison to a man for rape and murder of a woman.

The additional sessions judge (South) ruled that the prosecution succeeded in bringing home the guilt of the accused beyond shadow of any reasonable doubt and that it had been proved that the accused went to the house of the victim in Lyari and committed rape with her. Then, the accused murdered her by suffocating her and poisoning her by putting rodenticide in her mouth, the court said.

It sentenced the accused to ten years of rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs50,000 for offence of rape. He was awarded another ten-year imprisonment with Rs50,000 for the offence of the murder.

The court said that the convict would have to undergo additional imprisonment in case of default in payment of the fine.

Advocate Bahzad Akbar said that the incident took place on January 18, 2022. He said that the accused, who was familiar with electrical work, went to the house of the victim to repair an electric cutout. Finding her alone, the accused sexually assaulted her and then murdered her, he said.

The counsel, along with the state prosecutor, stated that the case against the accused had been proved beyond any shadow of doubt through a flawless chain of circumstantial and forensic evidence.

He contended that the testimony of the complainant established the motive and opportunity as the accused was a known visitor who had even arranged the deceased’s rented accommodation.

The defence counsel, however, argued that the accused was innocent and falsely implicated in this case due to family grudges.
