This letter refers to the news report ‘UN-backed report: 10 states, including Pakistan, home to two-thirds of world’s hungriest’ (April 25, 2026). Being a student of agriculture, I frequently meet the farmers and hear their grievances. The majority of Pakistani farmers are small landholders and their biggest concern is inflation. The cost of fertilisers and pesticides has surged exponentially, while their income has decreased. Although the government provides subsidies and loans, they mostly fall prey to administrative rigmaroles and are delayed. The government’s first and foremost priority must be addressing the economic difficulties of the farming community as they are the bedrock of our food security.
