LAHORE : The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday directed all relevant departments to take immediate and effective measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, warning that unusually heavy rains could cause large-scale destruction if timely arrangements are not ensured.

During the hearing of smog-related petitions, Justice Shahid Karim observed that forecasts indicate above-normal rainfall this year and stressed the need for urgent preparedness to avoid urban flooding and other disasters.

The court also ordered authorities to continue action against sugar mills that have failed to install wastewater treatment plants.

The court remarked that mills failing to comply within the stipulated timeframe should not be allowed to operate.

During the proceedings, the court sought a detailed report from the Water and Sanitation Agency regarding the installation of water meters across the city.

Member of the Environmental Commission Syed Kamal Haider submitted a report regarding transplanted trees. Justice Shahid Karim observed that successful growth of transplanted trees would be considered a significant environmental achievement. The court was further informed that the Lahore Development Authority and the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency were planning to install recharge wells for rainwater conservation.
