KARACHI: A speeding trailer truck rammed into a police van parked near the Chakwal Petrol Pump on the M-9 motorway, killing a sub-inspector and a constable, the Gadap City police said on Monday.

They said the accident occurred at around 5:40am, when Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan and constables Parwarish and Wajid were on duty. A 22-wheeler trailer suddenly crashed into the van with great force, killing Khan on the spot and trapping Wajid inside the badly damaged van under the trailer, they added.

The severity of the accident made rescue efforts difficult. Cranes and lifters were called in to remove the crushed vehicle. After more than an hour of efforts, the responders managed to pull out the damaged van from under the trailer.

Wajid was rescued after parts of the van were cut away, but he succumbed to his injuries during the operation. Khan’s body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while Wajid’s body was taken to a nearby private hospital. Both policemen had been posted at the Gadap City police station.

Police arrested the trailer driver Shahabuddin, son of Yasin Khan, who claimed that he had suffered an eye injury during his journey, which caused him to lose control of the truck.

Funeral prayers for the policemen were offered at the District East police headquarters, Saudabad Complex, Malir, where senior police officers, family members, colleagues and locals were in attendance.
