KARACHI: An allegedly most wanted terrorist linked to a banned nationalist organization was arrested during a joint operation by the Sindh Rangers and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Karachi’s Raees Goth on Monday.

A Rangers spokesperson said the operation was carried out at a checkpoint on Hub River Road, where Abdul Jabbar Sarki, son of Ghulam Rasool, who had long been wanted in terrorism-related cases, was arrested.

The spokesperson said the suspect’s name was included in the CTD’s Red Book, identifying him as one of the most wanted terrorists, adding that Rangers and CTD officials seized weapons, explosives, detonators and ball bearings from the suspect.

Investigators said Sarki had joined the network of Commander Sajjad Shah in 2020. Shah and his associates are allegedly involved in several sabotage and terrorist activities in Karachi and interior Sindh.

Officials said the suspect and an accomplice were involved in a grenade attack on a Rangers checkpoint near the Manzil Pump on the National Highway in June 2020, adding that the attack had injured two passers-by and caused partial damage to the checkpoint.

They said the suspect had also conducted recce of an Azadi stall in Gulshan-e-Hadeed ahead of Independence Day celebrations, adding that the suspect remained in touch with Shah, who is reportedly based abroad, and was allegedly planning attacks on sensitive installations in Karachi.

Officials have launched more operations to arrest other members of the network. The suspect has been handed over to the CTD, along with the seized weapons and explosives, according to the Rangers spokesperson.
