KARACHI: Information technology (IT) exports rose 33 per cent year-on-year to $423 million in April 2026, signalling continued momentum in the country’s technology sector despite broader economic challenges.

The monthly export figure was also 2.0 per cent higher than March 2026, taking cumulative IT exports during the first 10 months of FY26 to $3.8 billion, reflecting a 21 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

Net IT exports, calculated as exports minus imports, stood at $355 million in April, up 23 per cent from a year earlier, indicating sustained foreign exchange inflows from the sector.

Analysts said the strong performance was driven by rising global demand for Pakistani software services, higher freelancing income, expansion in export-oriented technology firms, and improving digital payment channels.

The government has set an ambitious target of $5 billion in IT exports for FY26 under its broader digital economy strategy. However, brokerage firm Topline Research expects exports to grow by 18-20 per cent during the fiscal year, reaching around US$4.5 billion, compared with FY25 exports of $3.8 billion.

Under the government’s ‘Uraan Pakistan’ economic transformation plan, authorities are targeting $10 billion in annual IT exports by FY29. The target implies a compound annual growth rate of around 27 per cent over the next three years.

Industry experts said achieving the FY29 target would require consistent policy support, improved internet infrastructure, greater investment in technology education, and easier access to international payment systems for freelancers and software exporters.
