KARACHI: Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan, in partnership with Bank Alfalah, has launched a rehabilitation programme to restore infrastructure and support flood-affected communities in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
The initiative, implemented with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Focus Humanitarian Assistance and the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, follows the August 2025 monsoon floods, which caused widespread damage through flash floods, debris flows and glacial lake outburst events.
Key stakeholders, including representatives from the Asian Development Bank, Global Affairs Canada, the European Union and Concern Worldwide, attended the launch event alongside senior officials from Bank Alfalah and AKF Pakistan.
The programme focuses on restoring drinking water systems, rehabilitating irrigation channels, building flood protection infrastructure and replenishing emergency shelter supplies. A separate component includes a solar power installation for a school in Chitral.
The total project cost is Rs57.05 million, including Rs50 million from Bank Alfalah and Rs7.05 million from the Aga Khan Foundation. It is expected to directly benefit more than 10,600 people, with indirect reach of about 13,000 across Gilgit, Ghizer and Hunza districts.
Implementation will involve local authorities and community participation, with an emphasis on maintaining rehabilitated infrastructure.CEO of Bank Alfalah Atif Bajwa said the initiative reflects the bank’s focus on community investment and post-disaster recovery.
Chief Executive of AKF Pakistan Akhtar Iqbal said the programme aims to rebuild infrastructure and strengthen resilience against future climate shocks through improved preparedness and community support mechanisms.
