LAHORE: Pakistan and Austria are poised to strengthen bilateral economic relations as both countries explore new avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, technology transfer and sustainable industrial development, said Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Standing Committee on Pak-Austria Trade Promotion Convener Raja Omer Nawaz on Thursday.
Speaking to a group of Pakistani and Austrian businessmen, Nawaz said the two countries already enjoy cordial and longstanding relations rooted in mutual respect and economic cooperation, but significant untapped potential remains across multiple sectors.
He observed that Austria, regarded as one of Europe’s technologically advanced economies, has expertise in renewable energy, engineering, industrial automation, railway infrastructure and environmental technology. Pakistan, meanwhile, offers opportunities through its strategic geographic location, expanding industrial base, large consumer market and youthful workforce.
He noted that Austria could serve as an important gateway for Pakistani exporters seeking access to wider European markets.Nawaz also praised Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera for his efforts to promote stronger commercial engagement between the two countries. He said the ambassador has played an important role in encouraging closer cooperation between the business communities of Pakistan and Austria.
He further acknowledged the contributions of Johannes Brunner, Usman Mohiuddin and Sarmad Amin for facilitating business connectivity and creating opportunities for collaboration between the private sectors of both countries.
Referring to a recent high-level meeting at the LCCI with Austrian embassy officials, Nawaz said discussions focused on bilateral trade expansion, investment promotion, industrial cooperation, renewable energy collaboration, vocational training and business-to-business networking.
According to Nawaz, Austria imports a range of Pakistani products, including textiles, garments, leather goods, sports goods, rice and agricultural commodities. Pakistan, in return, imports machinery, industrial equipment, chemicals, electrical products and advanced technologies from Austria.
He stressed that Pakistan has substantial potential to increase exports to Austria, particularly in sectors such as information technology services, pharmaceuticals, halal food, surgical instruments, engineering goods, processed foods, furniture and value-added textiles.
However, he said Pakistani exporters must focus on innovation, quality enhancement, modern packaging, branding and compliance with European standards to compete effectively in Austrian and wider European markets.
Nawaz added that future global trade trends are increasingly shifting towards green economies, digital transformation and sustainable industries. In this regard, Austria’s expertise in green technology and innovation could significantly support Pakistan’s industrial modernisation and sustainable development efforts.
