ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation increased by 0.79 per cent during the week ended on May 07, 2026, for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

According to PBS data, SPI for the week under review rose to 357.04 points as compared to 354.23 points recorded in the previous week.On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI increased by 15.16 per cent.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16 = 100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.The SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 0.69 per cent to 334.45 points from 332.16 points.

The SPI for consumption groups of Rs17,733-22,888; Rs22,889-29,517; Rs29,518-44,175; and above Rs44,175 increased by 0.77 per cent, 0.76 per cent, 0.83 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 items (43.14 per cent) increased, 14 items (27.45 per cent) decreased, while 15 items (29.41 per cent) remained stable.A major increase was observed in the prices of chicken, which rose by 12.82 per cent, followed by diesel by 5.1 per cent, wheat flour 3.42 per cent, petrol 1.66 per cent, curd 1.63 per cent, fresh milk 1.33 per cent, beef 0.65 per cent, tea prepared 0.53 per cent, mutton 0.5 per cent, potatoes 0.48 per cent, washing soap 0.12 per cent and cigarettes by 0.08 per cent.

On the other hand, prices of tomatoes declined by 7.08 per cent, garlic 1.91 per cent, eggs 1.22 per cent, LPG 1.08 per cent, pulse masoor 0.43 per cent, onions 0.38 per cent, pulse gram 0.36 per cent, rice IRRI-6/9 0.3 per cent and gur 0.19 per cent.

On a YoY basis, the SPI for the week under review increased by 15.16 per cent compared to the corresponding week of last year.During the period, a major increase was recorded in the prices of petrol by 58.32 per cent, diesel 55.76 per cent, electricity charges for Q1 52.58 per cent, wheat flour 50.65 per cent, LPG 48.82 percent and onions 41.97 per cent.

Prices of mutton, chili powder, garlic, beef, powdered milk and bananas also increased. Meanwhile, prices of potatoes declined by 44.58 per cent, pulse gram by 20.29 per cent, sugar by 13.76 per cent, salt powder by 13.26 per cent, pulse masoor by 11.74 per cent, eggs by 7.88 percent, chicken by 1.8 per cent and pulse moong by 1.6 per cent over the same period of last year, PBS reported.
