ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Vice President and Parliamentary Leader in Senate Sherry Rehman has said the PPP, in every tenure of its government, advocated policies and took measures aimed at strengthening independent and transparent journalism.

“The world observes the Press Freedom Day, a moment to recognize the importance of media freedom and the indispensable role journalists play in society,” she stated in a statement on the World Press Freedom Day. She expressed concern over the current media landscape in Pakistan, stating that it is unfortunately marked by censorship, intimidation, and incidents of violence against journalists. “The Pakistan Peoples Party remains steadfast in its commitment to press freedom. We stand shoulder to shoulder with journalists in defending their rights,” she said, adding that the day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by journalists and media organizations.

She reiterated that the Pakistan Peoples Party always played a key role in promoting and protecting media freedom in the country. She highlighted that Benazir Bhutto, President Asif Ali Zardari, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari set strong examples in supporting press freedom and the rights of journalists. “Journalists and media institutions play a crucial role in the democratic process, societal development, and accountability,” she added. “We respect their indispensable contribution in informing the public and holding those in power accountable.”
