LAHORE : Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari on Sunday paid rich tribute to media workers and the journalistic community on World Press Freedom Day, stating that journalism and politics share a deep and interdependent relationship, both essential for the stability of democracy.

In her statement, she emphasised that media workers who bravely perform their duties in harsh weather and challenging conditions are the true heroes of journalism, and their services are acknowledged by the entire nation.

Highlighting contemporary challenges, Azma Bokhari noted that in today’s modern era, the biggest threat to press freedom and professional journalism is the spread of fake news. She expressed concern that the proliferation of misinformation has not only created unrest in society but has also caused irreparable damage to responsible and credible journalism.

She reiterated that the Punjab government firmly believes in the fundamental principles of press freedom and will continue its efforts to promote a free, independent, and responsible media.

Sharing details about welfare initiatives for media workers, the minister stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab government has taken historic steps for the first time for the benefit of journalists. She announced that CM Maryam Nawaz will soon provide housing facilities to 3,200 journalists across the province, calling it a major relief package in the history of journalism.

She added that the Punjab government has immediately doubled the marriage grant for journalists’ daughters as well as the health grant for journalists, providing significant financial relief to the community.

In conclusion, Azma Bokhari reaffirmed that protecting the rights and ensuring the welfare of media workers remains a top priority of the government. She stated that all necessary measures are being taken to provide economic and social security to journalists, enabling them to perform their professional duties without any pressure.
