LAHORE: Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan on Monday paid glowing tribute to President Asif Ali Zardari, calling him the most experienced and far-sighted political leader in Pakistan, during an address to Pakistan People’s Party workers at a gathering organised by PPP Lahore.
Speaking at the event attended by PPP Lahore President Faisal Mir, General Secretary Dr Ayesha Shaukat, and Organising Committee Convener Majeed Ghauri, the governor said the current government could not have maintained its stability for even a moment without President Zardari's patronage and guidance. Governor said a well-orchestrated campaign had long been waged to isolate Zardari politically, tracing its origins to the era when the late Shaheed Benazir Bhutto first entered politics. He credited Zardari for not only standing beside Benazir Bhutto in a hostile political climate but also enduring 14 years of imprisonment on her behalf, refusing repeated pressure to abandon her cause.
The governor recalled that following Benazir Bhutto's assassination, Zardari rallied the nation under the slogan ‘Pakistan Khappay’ widely credited with steering the country away from chaos during one of its most turbulent periods. Describing Zardari's stewardship of the PPP as unparalleled, he said the President views the party as a sacred trust he intends to pass on to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He also expressed confidence that the PPP could fill the historic ground of Minar-i-Pakistan any time. Concluding his remarks, the governor reaffirmed his solidarity with Lahore's party organisation, declaring that Governor’s House Lahore is open to all PPP workers as their own home.
