NOWSHERA: An official on Tuesday said that all three Afghan refugee camps located in the district had been completely vacated and officially declared inactive following the government’s repatriation policy.
Nowshera Deputy Commissioner Irfanullah Mehsud told reporters that the camps, Turkmen Camp, Khairabad Camp, and Akora Khattak Camp, had been established to accommodate Afghan refugees with a total population of around 42,000.
He said that more than 40,000 refugees had already returned to Afghanistan, while the remaining approximately 2,000 were in the process of phase-wise repatriation.Following the evacuation, facilities previously set up for refugees, including schools, tube-wells for clean drinking water, dispensaries, and electricity infrastructure, had been handed over to the relevant government departments.
The DC added that Section 144 had been imposed on around 6,000 kanals of land vacated by the camps. As a result, all buying, selling, and construction activities on the land had been strictly prohibited. He added that the district administration had successfully achieved the targets set by the government regarding the evacuation of Afghan refugee camps in Nowshera.
