Enraged crowd beat a suspected death to death after getting hold of him during a mugging incident in the Korangi area in the late hours of Saturday.
The suspect was severely injured as a result of severe beating. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital on Sunday. The incident took place near a government school close to Sughra Imambargah in Korangi No 3 ½ within the limits of the Awami Colony police station. Police said two robbers were mugging citizens on Saturday night when locals intervened. One suspect managed to escape, while the other was overpowered by the crowd and subjected to severe violence.
The injured suspect was later identified as 24-year-old Rehan, son of Yousuf. He was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he died during treatment on Sunday.
According to SHO Adnan Bukhari, police recovered a weapon and two mobile phones, including a snatched iPhone, from the suspect’s possession. The officer said two mugging victims had identified the deceased suspect, and cases had been registered on their complaint. Efforts are under way to trace and arrest the absconding accomplice.
Police encounters
At least three suspected robbers were killed and two others, including an injured suspect, were arrested in various alleged police encounters in District Central on Sunday.
According to a spokesperson for the District Central police, the first encounter took place near the Dak Khana flyover within the limits of the Liaquatabad police station where Shaheen Force personnel exchanged fire with suspects involved in street crimes.
Officials said the suspects were robbing a citizen when police arrived at the scene, prompting the robbers to open fire. In retaliatory firing, two suspects were killed. Weapons, a mobile phone and a motorcycle were seized from the possession of the deceased suspects whose identification was under way.
In another incident near the riverbank at Chuna
Depot within the jurisdiction of the Super Market police station, a patrolling police team engaged in an exchange of fire with suspects.
According to police, the suspects were signalled to stop but they instead opened fire on them. In the ensuing shootout, one suspect was killed while his accomplice managed to escape.
A pistol, mobile phone, wallet and motorcycle was seized from the deceased suspect’s possession, police said, adding that a search operation was under way to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Meanwhile, near the Siddiqabad graveyard along the Lyari River in New Karachi Industrial Area, police claimed to have arrested two suspects, one of whom was injured, after an exchange of fire.
The arrested suspects were identified as Ashrafullah, son of Abdul Khaliq, and Raz.
Police said drugs, including crystal meth, a pistol with live rounds, cash and a motorcycle were recovered from the suspects’ possession. The injured suspect was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
A spokesperson for the District Central police said verification of the suspects’ criminal record was under way.
