ALPURI: A young labourer hailing from the Shangla district was killed while working in a coalmine in the Abbottabad district, local sources said on Sunday.

They said the deceased coalminer identified as Farid Ahmad was working inside the coalmine when he sustained injuries in an accident.

Upon receiving information about the incident, residents and fellow workers rushed to the site. He was being taken to a hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.

After completing necessary legal procedures, the body was dispatched to his native area. Coalmining remains a major source of livelihood for the people of Shangla, with more than 65 percent of the population reportedly engaged in the sector. However, frequent accidents continue to claim lives.

The Shangla residents expressed concern over the lack of safety measures and inadequate medical facilities for mine workers. They noted that many labourers suffered severe injuries in such incidents, often resulting in lifelong disabilities. They urged the government to enforce strict safety regulations in coalmines, ensure access to proper healthcare for workers, and provide adequate compensation and financial assistance to the families of deceased labourers.
