SWABI: Former Jamaat-e-Islami head Sirajul Haq on Sunday said Pakistan’s role in mediating between Iran and the United States was commendable, adding that the country should not become a party to any war as peace in the region was in its own best interest.

Addressing a workers’ convention held at Ahya-ul-Uloom in the Mansabdar area of Razar tehsil, the JI leader said rising petroleum prices and the imposition of multiple taxes had made life difficult for the common man. “Inflation and unemployment are increasing while public issues remain unresolved,” he added.

He also claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers were expressing a lack of confidence in their leadership and openly criticising PTI leaders. He added that the provincial government had failed to deliver on public expectations.

Separately, Jamaat-e-Islami provincial General Secretary Sabir Hussain Awan and Political Committee President Wajid Ali Shah announced the launch of a nationwide membership campaign.

They said a peaceful protest movement would be launched across Swabi district over farmers’ issues, electricity load-shedding, suspension of CNG supply, and deteriorating law and order. They added that a major protest demonstration would be held at Aman Chowk in Swabi on May 5, with participation from trade unions, transporters, miners, CNG station owners, farmers, labourers, and other affected groups.

They vowed that the protest movement would continue until the issues were resolved.
