Rawalpindi:A fresh increase in petroleum (POL) prices has triggered a sharp rise in the cost of essential food items, with vegetables in weekly bazaars and open markets becoming significantly more expensive.

Market observations show that prices of most vegetables have increased by Rs30 to Rs35 per kilogram. Chicken meat, which was previously available at around Rs630 per kg, is now being sold for over Rs700.

Fruit prices have also surged beyond the reach of average consumers e.g. 6 to 7 kilogram watermelon is now priced between Rs700 and Rs800, while melons that once sold for Rs140-150 per kg are now available at Rs200 per kg. Apples and other fruits have climbed to as high as Rs500 per kg, making them increasingly unaffordable.

Price control authorities appear unable to contain the situation, as frequent hikes in petrol prices continue to drive inflation. A market survey conducted by ‘The News’ found that increased transportation costs have directly impacted the prices of goods. Vegetables that were once affordable are now out of reach -- for instance, cucumbers have risen from Rs70 to Rs120 per kg, while bitter gourd has increased from Rs150 to Rs200-220 per kg.

Meat prices have also seen a steep rise, with butchers reportedly increasing rates without official notification.
