Pakistan is currently facing a serious gas shortage, which has become a major problem for both households and industries. The supply of gas has not been able to meet the increasing demand. Pakistan’s local gas fields are slowly running out, while the population and energy needs are continuously increasing. Poor management and outdated infrastructure also contribute to the problem, causing leakage and wastage. Pakistan also relies on imported energy sources such as LNG, which are highly prone to the kinds of disruptions we are witnessing now due to the Middle East conflict but also expensive even when things are stable. To solve this issue, the government needs to invest in new gas exploration projects and, simultaneously, promote renewable energy. Efficient use of gas and reduction of waste can also help improve the situation.
