Islamabad:The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) reported a substantial decline in road fatalities and accidents during the Eidul Fitr holidays, attributing the improvement to a rigorous enforcement campaign that saw over 3,400 citations issued to motorists across the federal capital.
Official data released by the police spokesperson reveals a 63 percent drop in total accident calls compared to the previous year, with incidents falling from 64 in 2025 to 23 this year. The statistics highlight a particularly sharp decline in the most severe cases, as fatal accidents plummeted by 80 percent, decreasing from five deaths last year to one during the current holiday period. Non-fatal accidents also saw a marked improvement, falling 59 percent from 17 to 7 incidents.
This shift in road safety coincided with a high-visibility enforcement initiative directed by Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. Chief Traffic Officer Captain (r) Hamzah Humayun confirmed that 3,439 challans were issued for a variety of dangerous maneuvers and equipment violations.
One-wheeling and helmet neglect remained primary targets for authorities, resulting in 723 and 716 citations, respectively. Officers also penalized 699 vehicle owners for missing or non-standardized number plates, while hundreds of other fines were distributed for reckless driving, lane violations, and driving without a valid license.
Beyond financial penalties, the traffic police took physical custody of 1,272 vehicles and motorcycles, the vast majority of which were bikes impounded for serious infractions. Furthermore, five FIRs were registered against individuals involved in the most egregious traffic offenses.
CTO Humayun credited the successful holiday period to a strategic deployment of personnel at high-traffic zones, including major markets, public parks, and recreational sites. He noted that the combination of strict enforcement and public cooperation was essential in managing the increased holiday load.
