Eight people were killed and several others, including policemen, injured in road traffic accidents in parts of the city during the first two days of Eidul Fitr.
According to police, a garbage truck hit a motorcycle in the Gulshan-e-Bihar locality of Orangi Town on the first day of Eid. The motorcyclist, identified as 45-year-old Umar, was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in a critical state by volunteers of the Chhipa Welfare Association. He later succumbed to his injures.
ASI Ghulam Mustafa of the Pakistan Bazaar police station said the driver responsible for the accident had been arrested and the truck taken into custody. He added that the vehicle lacked both rear lights and a number plate in violation of the traffic laws. Further investigations are under way.
In another incident near Ghaghar Phatak, one person was killed and five others, including three women, were injured when a Suzuki pickup overturned. Rescue officials from the Edhi Foundation identified the deceased as Suhail, while the injured were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.
Separately, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident near New Sabzi Mandi on the Super Highway. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by Edhi volunteers. Police said the accident occurred after an unidentified vehicle struck the victim and fled the scene.
In another accident, a motorcyclist was killed while a pedestrian sustained injuries near Nasir Jump, Christian Abadi, in Korangi. According to rescue officials from the Chhipa Welfare Association, emergency teams reached the scene promptly and shifted both the deceased and injured to Jinnah hospital.
The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Bilal, son of Chaudhry, while the injured pedestrian was identified as 32-year-old Anthony, son of John. Police said an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial findings suggest that the motorcyclist was over-speeding when a pedestrian suddenly came in front of him, causing him to lose control and collide.
Earlier, an elderly man was killed in a traffic accident near New Sabzi Mandi on the Super Highway in Karachi. According to Chhipa officials, the victim was hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
The deceased was later identified as 60-year-old Victor John, son of Joseph John. Police said initial investigation suggested the accident occurred due to overspeeding by the unidentified driver who fled the scene after the incident. Authorities have launched a search for the suspect.
Two people, including a minor child, were killed and a young man sustained serious injuries in separate traffic accidents on the second day of Eid in Karachi. According to police, a three-year-old boy, identified as Abdul Wahid, was killed after being hit by a passenger Mazda near Bhashani Bakery, Aman Chowk, in the Manghopir area.
The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities. Manghopir SHO Inayat Sheikh said the driver fled the scene after the accident. Police have taken the vehicle into custody and launched a search for the driver.
In an accident near Bilal Chowrangi in Korangi Industrial Area, a motorcyclist, identified as 25-year-old Asghar, lost his life, while another youth, Zafar, was critically injured. Both were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Rescue officials said the accident occurred when the speeding motorcycle collided with a pole.
Meanwhile, five people, including three policemen, were injured after a speeding van hit them at Quaidabad Chowk on the National Highway in Karachi. According to police, the accident occurred when a route KL passenger van rammed into individuals near the busy intersection. The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Shah Latif Town SHO Mumtaz Marwat said the injured included two police personnel, Hassan Nawaz and Rehman, from the Shah Latif Town police station, and Traffic Police Constable Imran.
Two pedestrians, including Altaf, were also injured in the incident. Police have arrested the van driver and taken the vehicle into custody. During initial interrogation, the driver claimed the accident occurred due to brake failure.
In various accidents on Mauripur Road and Hawkesbay Road during the first two days of Eidul Fitr, one person was killed and nine others, including a woman and daughter, were injured.
A young motorcyclist died while another was injured near Power House within the jurisdiction of the Kalri police station. The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Mubashir, son of Hussain. The body and the injured, Nasir, were shifted to the Civil Hospital, Karachi.
SHO Majid Ali Alvi said the accident occurred due to one-wheeling as both the youths lost control of their motorcycle and crashed into a pedestrian bridge pillar. The victims were residents of Agra Taj, Lyari.
In another accident near the Lyari Station Naval Flats on Mauripur Road, two women — identified as 45-year-old Shabana and her daughter Mahnoor — were injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road. The driver fled the scene and a search is under way.
Separately, a pedestrian aged around 35 was injured near the Shinwari Hotel on Mauripur Road after being struck by a speeding vehicle. The victim was shifted to the Civil Hospital while his identity could not be immediately ascertained.
Earlier, a 55-year-old man, Nawaz Ahmed, was injured in a hit-and-run incident near the Sher Shah police station and taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, four people were injured when two motorcycles collided on Hawkesbay-Manora Road. Police said the accident occurred due to overspeeding as the victims were returning from Hawkesbay. All the injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately.
