Under a major decision of the Sindh cabinet’s sub-committee on austerity, 60 per cent of the official vehicles of various government departments have been grounded.

The chairman of the Sindh cabinet sub-committee, Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated that out of a total of 2,837 vehicles across more than 47 provincial government departments, 1,524 vehicles had been grounded.

The grounded vehicles belonged to various departments, including the health, finance, school education, energy and anti-corruption departments.

In a statement, Memon said that in some departments, this rate had exceeded 65 per cent, while all vehicles in the inter-provincial coordination department had been completely grounded.

The decision was taken in view of rising fuel costs to significantly reduce government expenditures.

The information minister said the objective of the initiative was to reduce energy consumption, cut government spending and ensure the efficient use of resources.

The provincial government, he said, was strictly implementing the austerity policy in the national interest.

He added that these austerity measures would not only reduce expenses but also promote better utilisation of government resources. The initiative was expected to save millions of rupees in fuel costs.

He stated that essential and emergency vehicles would continue to be used as required.
