Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi on Thursday took notice of the increasing number of professional beggars in the city ahead of Eid-ulFitr.

Officials said he had directed the deputy commissioners to continue and intensify the campaign against professional beggars in markets, intersections and shopping centers. He said the DCs should ensure these beggars were not visible in public areas as they caused distress to citizens.

According to the commissioner’s office, in the last 10 days, 144 professional beggars were arrested, and FIRs were lodged against 30 beggars on orders issued by assistant commissioners.

Eighteen beggars were arrested in District Central, while 6 FIRs were registered, 32 beggars were caught in District East and two FIRs registered, 10 beggars were arrested in Keamari, 14 beggars were arrested in Korangi, 24 beggars were arrested in Malir while 17 FIRs were registered, 45 beggars were arrested in District South with five FIRs registered, and one beggar was held in District West.
