Artificial intelligence is quietly shaping a generation’s thinking. Children are increasingly using AI tools to answer questions, complete assignments and tackle problems that once required reflection and research. What appears to be efficiency may also be altering the way thinking itself develops.

This shift is unfolding within a generation shaped by a uniquely digital start. Many of today’s students experienced important school years during Covid-19 lockdowns. For them, digital environments are not an adjustment but a baseline. Technology became the space where they studied, interacted and made sense of the world.

As a result, digital natives are likely to approach AI very differently from digital migrants who adopted technology later in life. For younger users, AI is not arriving as a disruptive tool. It fits naturally into an already digital way of learning, searching and communicating. Increasingly, it is becoming the first place they turn when they need answers or direction.

This growing reliance raises an important question about how learning habits are changing. When AI systems summarise complex topics, generate arguments or structure responses, they can take over parts of the reasoning process that students would normally practise themselves. Over time, this may influence how comfortable young learners are with analysing information, navigating uncertainty and solving problems independently.

Another concern is how authority is perceived in digital spaces. AI responses often sound complete and confident, making them easy to trust. Younger users in particular may not always question where an answer comes from or what perspectives might be missing. The habit of verification, comparison and reflection, central to critical thinking, can slowly weaken if automated answers become the default.

This is also where the conversation around AI bias and safety alignment becomes relevant. AI systems generate responses based on patterns found in large volumes of training data. Because that data reflects real societies, it can carry existing perspectives, inequalities, and gaps. Outputs produced by AI can therefore mirror those patterns in ways that are not always visible to users.

At the same time, developers are increasingly working to align AI systems with safety goals by limiting harmful or misleading responses. These safeguards are important, especially as younger audiences interact with these tools more frequently. However, they can also create the impression that AI outputs are neutral or fully reliable, when in reality they remain shaped by design choices and underlying data.

This complexity highlights why discussions on AI governance need to expand. Regulation of technology companies is necessary, but governance must also consider how societies prepare young people to interact with AI responsibly. The way children understand and use AI today will influence how they evaluate information, participate in public debates and make decisions in the future.

Greater transparency about how systems are trained and how outputs are produced can help users understand their limitations. At the same time, education systems need to adapt so that students learn not only how to use AI tools but also how to question them. Without this balance, technological advancement may outpace the development of thinking skills.

Children are at the centre of this transition because the habits they form now will shape their long-term relationship with technology. When students consistently rely on AI for answers or explanations, the practice of working through problems independently may gradually decline.

None of this suggests that AI should be excluded from classrooms or learning spaces. When used thoughtfully, it can expand access to knowledge, support students who need assistance and encourage exploration of complex ideas. The challenge lies in ensuring that AI supports learning rather than replacing the thinking education is meant to develop. The goal should not simply be to raise a generation that is comfortable with AI. It should be to raise a generation that understands it well enough to question it, shape it,and contribute to it rather than only consuming it.
