Traffic jams in Islamabad have become a growing issue for residents, especially for those travelling through Park Road and nearby neighbourhoods. These areas serve as vital residential spaces and connecting routes between suburban communities and the city centre. Recently, ongoing road work and underpass construction along Park Road have had a significant impact on daily traffic patterns, resulting in longer travel times and rising frustration among drivers. In response, the traffic police has stepped up efforts to manage the traffic through alerts, deploying officers at critical intersections and communicating with the public via helplines and social media. While these strategies aim to keep traffic flowing during construction, the temporary reduction in road capacity inevitably affects travel times. However, infrastructure issues aren’t the only challenge. A significant factor that impacts traffic flow is the civic sense of road users. When drivers ignore lane discipline or block intersections, even minor delays can cascade into significant congestion.

Many cities around the world have implemented creative traffic management strategies that Islamabad could draw inspiration from. Although the context in Islamabad is unique, incorporating elements like smart signals, improved integration of public transport and demand management measures could gradually enhance urban mobility.
