Increase in prices of POL products slammed

PESHAWAR: Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday flayed the government for the increase in prices of petroleum products for the third consecutive time.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the senior vice president of the chamber, Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, who is also executive committee member of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that a large part of the prices of petroleum products in the country consists of taxes.

According to a Ministry of Energy document, 39 percent of the price of petrol per liter includes taxes of Rs100.21 including Rs13.31 as customs duty, Rs84.40 as petroleum levy and Rs2.50 as climate support levy.

While Rs94.93 as taxes are charged on a liter of diesel, which is 34 percent of the price. One liter of diesel has Rs15.68 as customs duty, Rs76.21 as petroleum levy, and Rs2.50 as climate support levy.

The document stated that oil marketing companies charge Rs7.87 per liter of petrol and diesel separately, while dealers charge Rs8.64 per liter of petrol and diesel separately. Sarhadi, who is also the president of Frontier Customs Agents Association, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said the government had included one-third of the tax in the price of petroleum products.
