Persian scholar Syed Ghayyur Hussain dies

PESHAWAR: Renowned Persian language scholar Professor Syed Ghayyur Hussain passed away after a prolonged illness, family sources said on Monday.The professor, affectionately called Meer Agha, had been suffering from cancer for a long time and breathed his last on Sunday. He was in his early 70s.

His funeral prayers were offered at Imambargah Lado in Astarzai town of Kohat district. He was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard. People from various walks of life attended the funeral rites.

The late scholar had immense love for Persian language and literature. He taught Persian language and literature at the Department of Persian Studies, University of Peshawar, and at several other educational institutions.

Late Prof Syed Ghayyur Hussain also served the Cultural Centre of the Islamic Republic of Iran for a long period. He taught Persian language at the Khana-e-Farhang and also worked as a liaison officer there.He was widely respected among literary circles for arranging cultural functions at the Iranian Cultural Centre to promote Persian, Urdu, Pashto and Hindko languages.
