PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council (KPBC) has announced a province-wide boycott of court proceedings today in protest against changes to the recruitment procedure for civil judges.

According to a press release issued by the KPBC, Vice Chairman Ahmad Farooq Khattak and Chairman of the Executive Committee Akbar Khan Kohistani rejected the government’s notification regarding the recruitment of civil judges, terming it unacceptable. They said the removal of the requirement of two years’ experience as a practicing lawyer for appointment of civil judges in Grade 18 was a wrong decision.

They stated that the condition of two years’ legal practice had been introduced after consultation between the Bar Council and the Peshawar High Court. However, the government abolished this requirement without consulting either the Peshawar High Court or the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council, which they described as an incorrect move.
