LAHORE: Cotton production in Pakistan has decreased by 17.45 per cent compared to the previous year, with both Sindh and Punjab provinces experiencing a reduction in ginning stage arrivals.
According to data issued by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association for the fortnight ending August 15, 2025, the total arrivals were 0.887 million bales against last year’s figure of 1.075 million bales, representing a difference of 0.187 million bales. This decline is primarily driven by a 24.1 per cent or a difference of 0.164 million bales. Punjab’s production stood at 0.369 million bales, showing a reduction by 5.9 per cent or a difference of 23,086 bales.
Balochistan showed some resilience as its output jumped by 17.24 per cent over last year’s yield. At the district level, Sanghar showed growth but most districts in Sindh and a number of key districts in Punjab experienced significant shortfalls, contributing to the overall national decline.
In Multan, 7,934 bales arrived, marking a 43.14 per cent increase from last year with a difference of 2,391 bales. Lodhran’s cotton arrivals were 2,750 bales, a sharp decrease of 73.57 per cent or 7,655 bales from the previous year. Khanewal received 62,523 bales, which is an 11.21 percent decrease from last year, a difference of 7,894 bales.
Dera Ghazi Khan recorded 55,278 bales, a significant increase of 145.7 per cent from last year. Rajanpur’s arrivals totalled 19,423 bales, a notable increase of 147.27 per cent from the previous year. Layyah had 21,460 bales arrive, representing a 23.86 per cent decrease from last year. Vehari’s arrivals were 73,984 bales, showing a slight decrease of 2.92 per cent from last year. In Sahiwal, 39,631 bales arrived, a 33.48 per cent decrease from last year.
Faisalabad’s arrivals were 5,210 bales, a 42.21 per cent decrease than last year. Rahim Yar Khan’s arrivals of 1,947 bales were a sharp 69.2 per cent decrease from last year. Bahawalpur recorded 18,436 bales, 37.54 percent less than the previous year. Bahawalnagar received 16,396 bales, a 19.43 per cent decrease from last year.
Bhakkar, Mianwali, Sargodha, Pakpattan, Okara and Kasur each recorded zero bales this year.In Sindh’s Hyderabad, 51,000 bales arrived, representing a 1.53 per cent increase from last year. Mirpur Khas had 17,700 bales, a 39.47 per cent decrease from last year.
Having a lion’s share in Sindh’s output, Sanghar recorded 390,051 bales, a decrease of 23.85 per cent from last year. Khairpur, Ghotki and Sukkur all had zero arrivals this year, a 100 per cent decrease from last year’s figures.Balochistan had 30,500 bales arrive, a 16.86 per cent increase of 4,400 bales from last year.
