Dear Editor,

I really enjoyed the issue of 15 May. The cover story ‘In bloom’ by Sameen Amer, was pure delight! As a proud Lahori, I can say that flowers in spring in Lahore are a sight that is totally intoxicating and wonderful. Thank you for such a beautiful write-up! ‘Protecting Swat’ by Yumna Zahid Ali was indeed food for thought. I hope that the concerned authorities do something about it.

Hi Ed,

This week’s (15 May) issue was really cool! I liked Mahnoor Malik’s interview by Asif Khan. Her answers were sensible and honest, but why do our celebrities have Indian actors and singers as their inspiration? Where is their patriotism, especially in the current situation where Indian artists are bashing Pakistan right, left and centre? Besides, we have very respectable icons of our own, too.

‘Lost and found’ by Raameen Hussain was too good! I loved it!

Smiling and social kindness

Dear Editor,

I am writing to highlight the lack of social warmth and smiling within our communities. Many individuals interact with friends, teachers and neighbours but often forget to share a simple smile. While they may offer formal greetings such as salam, they sometimes neglect the act of smiling, which is essential in making others feel happier and more welcome.

A smile is a powerful gesture. It radiates happiness and kindness, helping to build strong bonds and lasting friendships through genuine affection. Furthermore, a smile demonstrates that you truly care for those around you.

Scientific studies have shown that smiling reduces stress, boosts the immune system and even improves our own mood. When we smile at someone, we encourage them to smile back, creating a positive ripple effect across our neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces. A culture of smiling can also reduce misunderstandings and conflicts, as a warm expression often softens tense situations.

I believe it is our collective duty to spread happiness through kindness and smiles. We should especially make an effort to smile when interacting with our elders as a sign of respect and warmth, and teach younger children the value of a cheerful face and gentle words.
