The book Don't Believe Everything You Think is written by Joseph Nguyen, a modern writer whose work focuses mainly on thoughts, overthinking, anxiety and inner peace. Nguyen’s ideas are influenced by psychology, mindfulness and philosophy, and his contemporary self-help work became popular because he talks about how our thinking affects our happiness. He believes most human problems come from uncontrolled thinking and that what we think is not always true.
Don’t Believe Everything You Think was published in 2022. It is a thoughtful, eye-opening guide about the human mind. It explains how most of our suffering does not come from real problems but from the way we think about them.
The book begins with a powerful truth: most of our suffering does not actually come from life itself but from our thoughts about life. The human brain produces thousands of thoughts every day and many of them are repetitive, fearful and critical. The real problem is not that we have these thoughts but that we believe them as if they are facts. We identify with them so deeply that we think they define us. But Nguyen reminds us that happiness and peace aren’t things we need to chase in the outside world; they are already part of our natural state. They only get buried when we believe every single thought our mind throws at us.
The author asks an important question: “If everyone’s goal in life is to be happy, then why do so many people feel restless, anxious or dissatisfied?” His answer is that our suffering comes from the illusion of lack. The mind is always telling us that something is missing, that we are not good enough, that we don’t have enough, that we will finally be happy when we achieve the next goal. Losing your job, for instance, is painful but telling yourself I am worthless, I will never recover and my life is ruined creates suffering. Pain happens but suffering is optional because it is created in the mind. Thoughts are not reality; they are simply words and images appearing in your mind. Overthinking often creates anxiety because we are constantly rehearsing.
Similarly, ego convinces us that if we manage every situation perfectly, we can protect ourselves and achieve happiness. But things don’t actually work like this. Life is unpredictable.
The book reinforces that peace and freedom are our default state. Life will still bring challenges, but by no longer believing every thought, we prevent suffering from taking over our experiences. Suffering is optional and inner freedom is already within you; you don't need to search for happiness externally. True peace comes when we stop believing every thought and start understanding our mind.
Don’t Believe Everything You Think is really a self-help guide for young readers dealing with overthinking and depression, and I highly recommend this book to them.
