In today’s Us (17 April) the cover story ‘The weight of eight billion’ by Zakeriya Ali addresses a very serious issue and deserves to be taken seriously by everyone. Students should be assigned practical projects to educate them about environmental preservation, including saving water, electricity and fuel, as well as avoiding food waste. Awareness campaigns are essential and should be conducted across the country in schools and colleges.
Another article in the same issue, ‘Vaping the future away’ by Abza Virk, also highlights a significant threat to our country’s future. I believe city governments should organise activities to engage young people so that they have meaningful outlets for their time and energy.

Drug abuse among youth
Dear Editor,
I am writing to draw your attention to the alarming rise of drug abuse among the youth in our society. This issue is rapidly spreading and affecting the future of our young generation. Many teenagers and young adults are falling into the trap of drug use due to peer pressure, stress, lack of guidance and more.
Drug abuse harms the body and mind, often resulting in poor academic performance, damaged relationships and even criminal behaviour. The impact is not limited to individuals alone; it also places a burden on families, healthcare systems and society as a whole.
Drug abuse among the youth is a serious problem that demands immediate attention. By raising awareness, providing support and promoting a healthy lifestyle, we can help guide our youth towards a brighter and drug-free future.
